Chamaenerion augustifolium
Onagraceae (Evening Primrose family)
The very young shoots and leaves of fireweed can be eaten when cooked. The shoots are high in vitamins A and C. This plants name refers to its ability to grow in areas that have been burnt by fire. After the bombing of London in the second World War, fireweed spread quickly across the area. In Russia, the leaves are used to make Ivan Chai.
