Saponaria officinalis
Caryophyllaceae (Carnation family)
This plant contains poisonous saponins, which is where it gets its genus saponaria, sapo meaning soap in Latin. A lather can be made from crushing its foliage. Its other common name, Bouncing Bet, is an old time phrase for a washerwoman. Pictured is the flora-pleno variety of soapwort.
